  • Shanghai Nights!

I've limited internet access here in China, so I have to make this update quick. If it's cut off abruptly, the Chinese police have most likely gotten to me and my laptop.

Things I've seen and noticed about Shanghai.

The first thing you notice is the pollution. I blew my nose when I arrived in my hotel and saw so much soot.

The traffic here is crazy, and not in the waiting, but how people drive. I thought NYC was bad, this is far worse, with far more honking. There were so many close calls with the buses I took that I feared for other people's lives, and I've no sympathy most of the time. If Asian stereotypes were real, this is it.

Shanghai is the home of the xiao loong bao (soup dumpling), but I've been underwhelmed. The first meal here was the most famous restaurant (with numerous Chinese celebrities coming here). Honestly, I've had much better in NY (Joe's Shanghai).

    Starbucks is pretty big here.

The place is so unhygienic and unsanitary. Everyone, and I mean everyone (including women) hocks loogies here like nothing. I saw a mother unbutton the back of her son's trousers and he pooped right in front of me on the sidewalk. I continued to eat my pork bun like a bauss.

Their fashion sense, or lack of. Most guys here wear ugly brown sports jackets and loafers. Girls wear these t-shirts with slogans or quotes that would make an English teacher weep and off himself with a staple gun in the eye.

Their skyline easily rivals NYC's. They have some of the tallest buildings in the world here, including the tallest hotel on the planet.

The food is amazing and cheap. For breakfast, what I would normally spend in NY (roughly $30), I got got $4 USD. Sure, the decor was like a dive bar's bathroom, but the food is tastiest at these places.

Corner street meat, though probably not the cleanest food, was some of the tastiest. I had grilled veal, lamb, random animal parts, was offered testicle but politely declined, and $2 (USD) 40oz Shanghai beer. I thought it would be fake beer or something, but it was legit. If NY had these offerings, I'd be drunk every night

Everyone here owns a scooter or bike. Buicks, VW, and Audi are the most common car brands I've seen, with an occasional.

I only saw one Black person and two Indians so far.

The store owners here aren't as annoying or aggressive as those from Hong Kong, thankfully.

Facebook is blocked here, and I've so many notifications and can't reply. CURSE YOU CENSORSHIP!

Jetlagged like a mofo. I fell asleep at 8pm. What am I, a senior citizen?

  • Note to self: spam Chris' FB wall and pictures

  • LOL Facebook is blocked... suckkkka I've been spamming you.

  • HAVE FUN!! Maybe one day I'll make it to China for a visit! I'll probably have to bring you, Alex or Timmy to be my translator =)

  • Glad you're having fun in chiner, Rahn

  • For the first part of the post, your description reminded me of Korea. Until that kid dropped a deuce in the middle of the street. That shit's animal status. Put that family in a zoo.

  • go to YuYuan garden and xian tian di.

  • chris brown is dropping deuces?

  • left you some love on your wall :D

  • I just noticed I'm the first commenter when usually it's Chris. Oh yeahhh

  • Facebook is blocked? Seriously? Heeheehh you know how many more members facebook would have if it weren't?

@Roadlesstaken - When I first read your comment I was confused cause I was so sure it was Chris.

  • I thought Xanga was blocked too. Xiao long bao is amazing in Shanghai, don't go to the hyped up places where celebrities go, find the small restaurants with all the locals.

  • Oh mann. When you were talking about xiao long bao, it reminded me of Taiwan! Except for the whole blocked facebook. The xiao long bao place I went to in Taipei called Din Tai Fong was overrated even though it was really famous. I definitely agree with @passionblame! It's all about the small restaurants with all the locals! :D

  • @Roadlesstaken - Haha I noticed that too!

  • I bet the local mom pop shops on the street corners are delicious, haha hygiene is questionable everywhere in China. have fun!

@mr_jin_tonic - haha remember when you bitched out that girl for making fun of asians for eating dogmeat?
yup, I believe you just said a Chinese kid should be put in a zoo.

  • Proxy server! Also, I like how you rock Liz's scarf :D

  • @joooolie - Well, if you notice, I didn't specify them as Chinese. I said, "put that FAMILY in a zoo", not "put all Chinese in a zoo". Nah mean?

  • @mr_jin_tonic - Damn, you're right! MrJin, you're bad ass.

  • @mr_jin_tonic -  haha but actually a lot of them do this. Kids have a little slit in their onesies to facilitate the process...think um...diaper conservation! China is Green! (not really, it's just an expensive hassle)

  • @joooolie - Wait...wut?

You're telling me that it's common practice for Chinese mothers to encourage their children take a shit on the sidewalk? Even worse, they do this because they are too poor and lazy to afford diapers?

You best be pulling my leg.

  • Ah, good old censorship

So what's the occasion for Shanghai?

  • it always makes me wonder if people that ever wear those shirts with stupid sayings on them know what it means...

have fun! and dont get sick

  • @mr_jin_tonic - common practice, although I would have thought it more common in smaller villages rather than in shanghai. And lazy is not really the reason, just different societal norms. We value cleanliness here but in Asia, many places don't even give you soap or tp in their bathrooms. While in VN, I've definitely seen grown men pee on the streets in broad daylight (not drunk). I would venture to guess not all of Korea meets first world country standards either. A korean friend of mine told me about the sanitation system in the countrysides and it didn't sound all that sanitary. Also other cultures might find it odd that we wrap our babies' butts up with plastic and let them sit in their poop until they cry to be changed, diaper rashes aren't pleasant for our babies. Which one is lazier-- the one who's willing to change the kids' pants/wash them when they get soiled or the one who wants convenience of throwing away disposable plastic underwear? There are many ways to look at things.

  • I saw a mother unbutton the back of her son's trousers and he pooped right in front of me on the sidewalk. I continued to eat my pork bun like a bauss. hha epic..

  • Lol Beijing's pollution is so much worse. You can't even see the sky, it's just like smog. LOL the shirts with the sentences that make no sense are the best. You should be careful about the street food though. Some of my friends bought some popsicle and they had diarrhea. They had watermelon in a restaurant as a dessert, same thing.

  • did you try dog meat yet ? lawls :P

  • Nice seeing you post something like this...it's a nice change from your silly ones :P Oh, and why are you in Shanghai?!

  • You're not senior citizen until you're 27, you've got a few months.

  • BWUAHAHAHA... apparently there's an app to use fb in China... i duno what but my friend uses it...

and uh, dude! what do u eat for breakfast?? $30 is a LOT of $$...

    ciao~

  • lol I was expecting Shanghai to be a rival city to HK with their fashion and lifestyle.

  • Hopefully your stomach lining is intact. If you come back with it in good shape, we'll go to K-town and fuck it up good and proper.

  • Shanghai nights! We're in the same timezone! lol

  • Ouch fb is blocked lol. At least in Shanghai you can see how they copy iPhones lol

  • ...which is why i have never been tempted to visit Shanghai... :)

  • If I ever do go to shanghai I need someone who can talk and translate. I went to HK with my family and the language barrier was just a total fail for us aha. Still enjoyable tho[:

  • i love corner street meat there. gave me a stomache virus but its worth it.

  • Facebook is blocked?! Your trip sounds interesting so far. :]

  • miss your one liner comments on my xanga LOL!

But didn't you expect that from your mother land?

  • i hope you have pics of that kid pooping in front of you...

  • wow, traveling outside the states...  groovy!

  • Joe's Shanghai? Blasphemy. You havent found the right hole in the wall yet. Keep looking! Joe's is for tourist scum! (This one's for you fLiPgUy31O) =p

  • When I had a layover in Shanghai for 15 hours, I noticed that the people weren't as..."attractive" as I thought they might be in a bustling city like Shanghai so I figured that it was only because i was stuck in the airport. I guess it is not just limited to the airport lol. /:

  • seriously want to go to shanghai ... thanks for the heads up first ;) . have lots of fun!

  • You're in Shanghai? I'm jealous. Insanely jealous. What's the occasion?

Also, according to Alex, you want to shave off your hair. The 'fro is good, man. Keep it, I say!

  • I always wanted to go to Joe's Shanghai in NYC. Maybe I'll hit it up next time I'm in NYC. I love how blunt and real with everything lol.

  • Very interesting topic will bookmark your site to check if you write more about in the future.
    Voyance gratuite immediate

  • you went to din tai fung didn't you? the xlb are small but they're soo goood. much better than joe shanghai, but joe shanghai is much more worth your monies.

and the black and indian kids? probably nyu study abroad students.
