Selected For Jury Duty.
Noooooooo!That's right. I've been selected. This is probably worse than being selected last in dodge ball, but whatever. I guess it was inevitable, right? So now what? How am I going to pass the time, spending 9 hours in a room full of strangers?
I will need a pair of these eyeglasses ASAP!As you will see, a lot of these activities are less practical than others, but here are 30 ideas I think could help me pass the time.
1. Read the magazines and newspapers (from 2009) left out on the table.
2. Make conversation with the coffee machine. “So, is your coffee any good?”
3. Make conversation with people in the halls. "So, you come here a lot?"
4. Read books that I brought. Of course, I came prepared with plenty of reading material, right? Right.
5. Daydream.
6. Plan my next vacation. How's North Korea this time of year?
7. People watch. This is New York, after all.
8. Take pictures of people in the room. Photoshop them with funny mustaches.
9. Live Tweet my experience.
10. Stretch. Do some neck rolls. Move my legs around. Maybe get everyone to do yoga with me.
11. Draw. Maybe on the walls too, if I'm feeling like an anarchist.
12. Do the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. Realize half are completed.
13. Read the newspaper itself (I prefer the comics section, but that's just me).
14. Take a nap or two....or three. I just hope I don't miss my number when it's called.
15. Text my friends, try to waste their time.
What I'll end up doing for 9 hours.16. Think up excuses for why I can't be on a jury (without lying too much).
17. Time how long I can hold my breath.
18. Try writing something with my opposite hand.
19. Read ingredients and nutritional facts on the packages of food I have.
20. Strike up a conversation with the nice person sitting next to me, especially if they are attractive. Get coffee thrown at face for using a cheesy pick-up line.
21. Sketch on every piece of paper available.
22. Count ceiling tiles, number of windows and doors, etc. (this wastes lots of time).
23. Reread the Jury Duty pamphlet given to me.
24. Bring a deck of cards and practice card counting for blackjack. Vegas is coming soon.
25. Test my ability to count accurately 60 seconds (check with the clock to see if I'm right). Repeat.
25. Clean out and organize my wallet.
26. Get everyone in the room to do the Harlem Shake.
27. Browse Reddit (I hope my battery lasts this long).
28. Learn sign language.
29. Take online surveys and hopefully win a free iPod.
30. Write a blog post on ten things to do while waiting at jury duty.I'm prepared. I should be good for Jury Duty. I'll last a good .0031 seconds before I decide to leap out the window and dance in traffic.

I was, and I messed around on my phone, watched the news channel on TV, and avoided talking to the other people there. It was a great time.
did you just get the summons or was your number called?
@Wemustcreate - I got them about three weeks ago. I have to call in each night before to see if I have to show up for the next five days.
@CaKaLusa - same thing happened to me, you probably won't be called. And if you do, there are ways to get out of it and then you won't have to serve for 7 years

I brought some magazines, brought some ear buds, and watched Netflix on my phone. I was actually on Beluga chatting with you and everyone else... and it was my freakin' birthday. hahaha
Omg I so want to do jury duty!! I actually got selected but my boss wouldn't let me do it because I was needed at work

@CaKaLusa - aw dang, well hopefully the case will settle out of court, that happens a lot. When they talk to you, tell them you're not interested but don't be obnoxious about it, and when they read you to the description, say you're biased and make up a reason. Let me know how it goes. Maybe the case is the scranton strangler!

I have, and I didn't have time to be bored. We listened to testimony, discussed it, and gave a verdict. Passed around a bag of weed, but it was just evidence.

As for me, I had grand jury duty. Basically one day a week for three months of listening to case after case about arsonists, burglaries, drunk drivers, and drug busts. Wasn't too bad actually, and they paid for lunch.

the one time i went i didn't get picked because of my replies on the questionnaire, which i deliberately answered to excuse me--the defense would never have wanted me in, not in a million years. plus there were other issues, like the judge went to law school with one of my husband's partners at his firm. since the defendant was a pimp accused of kidnapping, among other things, my answer, "i think pimps are lower than cockroaches and prostitutes are victims" did it. i loved how the pimp and his lawyers glared at me.

Haha! Great ideas. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person on the planet that finds jury duty interesting. I served several times in Manhattan Criminal Court and was picked 3 times. Once as an alternate, once as a foreman simply by virtue of being the first juror chosen and another as one of the other 11 jurors.
First I can tell you I've never spent a full day nor a full 2 weeks there in the jury pool. They've always announced, sometimes before lunch, we could go home and come back tomorrow, often times "Come back tomorrow at 10 or 11". Never done a full 9-5. The only time I served a full two weeks was the time I was foreman. It was a very bizarre murder case and oddly entertaining. For example, there were a lot of pieces of evidence entered, nearly 200. At one point the DA asked for a piece to be entered but couldn't remember what number we were up to. As he shuffled through papers one of the jurors said, "We're up to 131" in a deadpan voice. Everyone in the court including the DA and judge cracked up and it turned out she was right. Another moment of brevity involved the following. The defendant built a very nice wooden box in his West 72nd street apartment big enough for his sister who he then murdered. He borrowed a handtruck from the super and rolled the box with his sister inside to West End avenue one morning where he left it in front of an apartment complex for trash day pickup scheduled for the next morning. That was horrible but here comes the funny part. In order to place the time the box was left on that curb the DA found a number of witnesses who observed it. In typical Manhattan fashion every witness said they remembered the box because they thought, "Hmmmm. I could use this for something in my apartment." One thought it would be nice in her foyer to put plants and such on. The last of this set of witnesses was the super of the building the box was left by. When he said, "I decided if the box was still there when I finish I'm going to take it home and use it in my garage to store tools" everyone including the judge cracked up. But it was horrible. The box was there when his day ended but when he moved the box he discovered it was heavy, saw what looked like blood left under it and called the police.
If you get chosen for a case early on you're probably going to be done with jury duty in a few days. At least that was my experience with the other cases. In one instance I was chosen for a jury on the first day. The trial began on the 2nd day. On the 3rd we were told the guy switched his plea to guilty and we were released.
The one time I found boring was when I was for whatever reason called to Manhattan civil court. I was picked for a case and again got out early but damn I needed to tape my eyelids open.

@CaKaLusa - Jeez. I've never heard of a telephone standby juror selection. Must be relatively new? I'm pretty certain if you get the call you'll be given plenty of notification time. Good luck!
As of maybe a decade or more ago they show a film at the beginning of jury duty. It's pretty interesting...the history of justice in the world. The purpose of the film is to explain why our jury system is so important.
One thing I didn't mention is how much the system does to show appreciation to jurors and to make things as easy and comfortable as possible in that situation. Judges, attorneys and the people in charge of jury pools let jurors know their time is needed and appreciated and do whatever they can within the their bounds to accommodate jurors. I've been again and again impressed by that. Sure it's an inconvenience but we are perhaps the most important part of the justice system and I've found the courts not only make us aware of that, they appreciate us by getting us in and out as quickly as they can.
I've only gotten one summons for jury duty, but I didn't have to go in because the case ended up being settled out of court.

i've never understood why someone wouldn't want to be selected for jury duty. considering how important of a role it is, i'd consider it an honor.

@flapper_femme_fatale - I sat for 8 hours not doing much, then called in, and later dismissed. If I was selected, perhaps I'd be more enthused. Unfortunately I wasn't selected to be a juror.

I got jury duty summons numerous times. It's like they know exactly when my 7 years are up because my dad called me to tell me I got another one in the mail. I also got called for Federal court as well! I got selected for the first round of juror selection but I got let go after making a fuss, complaining that the old lady had no right to be suing the city for falling. I said it was her own fault. They let me go.
Anyway, the best way is to read the paper or a good book. Some places, like federal court, don't allow cell phones.
I disagree cotelemply with you, TB. I've been waiting to get a jury notice in the mail for years. I've always dreamed of being on a jury.I got one two weeks ago. My brother filled out the form and mailed it in for me. He thought he was doing me a favor. He told them I was going to be busy with law school. They excused me. I was furious. Still am.Now I'm never going to know what it feels like to be on the other side of things.
