  • Work Folly.

    So I've recently started to
slave away at my new job and everything has been going quite well. The
commute is nonexistent, the benefits are better than your mother, it's
a great place to work for with huge growth (Microsoft wanted to acquire
us recently), and the pay is ... letting me live rather comfortably.

    I
currently work in a small team, busting out hundreds of files per day
just by myself. And much like how I am with your sister, I like to work
fast, steady, efficiently, and with no BS. But ever since I've been
here, I've been receiving subtle hinting by my manager to "slow down".

"Heyyyyy...," as he puts his arm around my back. I save my current work and swivel my chair around.

    "Hey, what's up?"

    "Nothing,
just checking up on you; seeing how you're doing." I see his eyes dart
at my monitor and refocuses his attention on me.

"Oh, I'm alright. Just finishing up this project."

"Yeah, take your time. Don't have to rush, speedster!" He playfully punches my shoulder as he walks away with a cheesy laugh.

    This
has been going on for a few days now. And this being my third week on
the job, I've been beginning to wonder what course of action(s) I
should take. Should I follow his request or go at my own pace but risk being outcaste by my colleagues?

  • All work and no play makes Cakalusa ... something something.

  • damn I'm quick.

  • slow down a little, but still be faster than your coworkers. that way you will look like you listened, but you still whoop the competition.

  • i'm confused.
    your boss makes no sense...
and why would you be outcasted?

    work for a promotion!
    live a little...more comfortably.

  • He's just trying to tell you that you're gonna get laid off by the end of the year, and it wasn't his decision.  ^.^"

  • yer boss is nice

  • That is a NICE office. But for the record... no one likes an overachiever. But you're not working for them are you? I say do your thang and take over the world.

  • no idea... sounds a bit off.

  • hm... is your work meeting standards?

  • "he puts his arm around my back" and "playfully punches my shoulder as he walks away with a cheesy laugh" .....seems to me like your boss is just finding a reason to flirt with you.

    less work, more me ;)

  • Stop making the rest of us look bad, with your overachievment and your lotsa e-props. Play more scrabble online, or something. Or, if you wanted, you could have some of my work. I have more than enough to go around...

  • Go against the flow... being an outcast will soon payoff!

  • groove to your own beat

  • its obvious your boss has a man crush on you. he means slow down...in bed.

  • Work at the same speed but blog twice a day.

  • You're Asian.  It's in your genes to kick everyone's ass in work ethic.  But hahaha to Wu's comment above me.

  • Just work.

  • if you don't slow down you're going to end up like harold, having your coworkers acknowledge your masterful skills

  • go crazy?

    don't MIND if I do!

  • if you work too fast he'll fire you so you won't take his job.

  • whoa you have a nickname now at work

  • go get em speedster.

  • This is just the same as "don't work too hard" comment from the boss. lol...

  • But this post is a bit more "refined", thanks for the effort. jk..

  • slow down but don't b slower than ur colleagues. cuz he's ur boss, u kinda have to listen to him, else he'll use the reason that u seldom listen to others if he should decide to fire u. but dont' b slower than ur colleagues else he'll hint that u're too slow, and use that as a reason in his decision to fire u.

it's a bit early to tell what sort of boss he is. mind i ask what he looks like (fat, tall, kind face or thin lips, etc?), how he dresses (ie. is he a fashion king?), how he treats his coworkers + employees, what others say abt him?

  • i got a perfect solution: ask him out on a man-date.

  • He probably means the opposite of what you're thinking and wants you to go faster. Hmmm... Sucks if I'm right.

  • maybe he's coming onto you.

either that, or you should take a break. up to you

  • ur boss wants u bad =]
be wary of being asked for a "private chat." they never end well.

    ahaha.

  • haha sounds like he's intimidated by your awesomeness

  • that is so ridiculously counterintuitive...why is he a boss?! must have banged his boss.

  • SEXUAL HARASSMENT, TIGER!

  • you should hit him.

  • "slow down babe lets take our time... slow down babe if u don't mind"

ohhh it proves that most americans are inefficient.

  • F*ck 'em. I say keep up your own pace. He just doesn't want you to make him look bad.

  • sniff back..  I too what?

  • i say work at YOUR pace.. and if YOUR pace pleases the higher gods then later you'll be putting your arm around your manager and asking how HE is doing =) that is.. if you can dodge being badmouthed by him and then he'll find a way to get rid of you.. YO! i think i read this scenario from men's health [dont ask me why i read a guys magazine] lol..

  • wtf would speeding up accomplish.  Listen to your boss.

  • Personally I've always worked my own pace, but then again I don't necessarily play well with others at work. Perhaps if I found the right coworkers, but it seems that I keep finding those working establishments that have asshat employees. I have such a hard time relating to asshats, and besides...I don't speak asshat. Sadly the only option left is to fake it.

  • Then again...faking it is not neccessarily a bad thing.

  • wats ur job? graphic designing?

  • you should slow down a little bit - so that you can leave room for "fake improvement". If you set your own standards too high in the beginning, there's no room for slacking off later.

That being said though, Pandalize is right, just be that tiny bit faster than everyone else!

  • well, if u don't think ur working too hard then just go with the flow =).
ryc: lol "randomly expensive"....can i get some options?

  • what do you do anyway?

  • I think he likes you. :O

  • office politics...

  • Try your hardest, do your best. It's play not work anyways. No, he's doing the CYA, just tell him you cant' help yourself from going so fast, is there more stuff to do. Yeah, I know there is consequences and office politics. Just be natural, and it is natural to be competitive, and that includes self-motivation competing against self.

  • "he puts his arm around my back" and "playfully punches my shoulder as he walks away with a cheesy laugh" .....seems to me like your boss is just finding a reason to flirt with you.

    less work, more me ;)

hahaha. $5 says that if you show some more skin, you'll get that promotion.

  • If that's your office, can I swap jobs with you?

Maybe it's best too slow down just a little... he might think you're after his job if you keep doing so well!

  • woops, there's an extra 'o' on that to.

  • sounds like a state worker haha

  • wait. you actually have a job??!

  • whistle while you work!

  • "he puts his arm around my back".. are you sure he's not hitting on you? haha.

  • finish your shit, then shit about how boring your work is.
or...do your job the way all women would like to be done and get to know people at the same time. reduces chances of exile AND not conform work.

  • hmm... methinks your boss wants to do you. nice and slow... in his bed.

  • Do whatever the hell you want. Who gives a damn for being an outcast, work for the promotion. Show him that you're willing to work.

  • hahaha lol, my attempt at being emo/poetic has failed. :(

so where do u work at?

  • makes cakalusa a dull boy

  • Your office looks so nice! & if he wants you to slow down, do so just a little bit.
There's no harm in slacking off every once in awhile!

  • I was just talking about this with my co worker today!.. Ah the Asian Expectation. Here's to all the slackers, work even harder! They can't fire you for exceeding your work load. Maybe for being a kiss ass, maybe.

  • and I want your job. ;)

  • being an outcast, will get you promoted soon ~

  • nice view,

hmmm, sounds like someone's flirting with you.... lol

  • i think the boss is a bit jealous!

but you dont wanan seem like your not listeni8ng to him

so do as some of the other have said slow down but still beat the others

  • whoa, a semi normal post from you.  i'm sure this is a fluke.

about your job situation... in the words of the great MC Hammer,

    can't touch this!

  • if you want to work...maybe he should stop being 'big brother' and let you work.

on the other hand, say that your effort increases you co-workers' workloads down the line, potentially increasing sales/numbers/whatever it is you do, yet they despise you for it and work begins to suck. Do you care if your co-workers like you? if not, fuck it.

finally, is your boss scared you're gonna take his job? Or...is he just finding an excuse to drop by your desk? ;] i'm sure you'll find the best solution. :)

  • LOL at wuwu's comment. XD

  • Man...benefits better than my mother. That must be one heck of a job. And what's this about my sister (if I had one)? LOL, you are funny...

Obviously, your manager has as crush on you. What can I say. You work too hard for your own good. *sigh*

  • He does seem a bit touchy-feely, now doesn't he...

  • i say that you punch your boss back and work at your own pace.  if any coworkers outcast you, go punch them too.

  • Everyone should have one big lunch, cause if someone doesn't wanna talk, he/she better eat!

    Naw mean?

  • haha apparently i'm a 'speed demon' at work too even though i think i'm doing the normal quota that i have to i always get comments like 'wow, you got through a lot today rushing around'. trust me i'm not! i just walk fast and look like i have somewhere to go!

  • downloading porn, eh?

  • I hate co-workers. They will backstab you any chance they get. It was like the second week on my job and my Boss said I'm doing great. Then he writes on everyone elses timesheet how they don't do this or that and me and my friend were the only ones without anything written on ours. But one of the coworkers wrote somthing on mine and I could tell it wasn't the bosses hand writing.

Long story short, slow down or else they will try to sabotage you and get you fired. Like me! :D

Probably not fired, but they will sabotage you.

  • its been in my experience that u gotta play the politics right. always respect your manager no matter what cuz he will help back u up in time of need or in time of promotions (its a power trip thing). heres my take: definitely keep up the great work your doing cuz secretly he loves your drive unless ur doing a quick sloppy job, BUT he wants u to check in with him periodically.

  • nyc, london, and hawaii. :)

  • maybe hes gay..
and wants to you work slower.
    stay later.
    for yaknow--alone time?
    :)

    puwahahha

  • money money... $_$
if i don't get a job which pay lets me "live rather comfortably.", i'd die bad.

  • hmmm... it's part of a way for them to feel comfortable with you.

  • yeah, do what you like best.. If you're comfortable with your speed, why change to being slower?

btw. I also had a boss that did that arm-on-the-shoulder-stuff and having this strange nicely attitude, I couldn't stand him.. you have no problem with that?

(and no, he was not gay, it was just his personality)

  • Take him down.  He's telling you this to prevent you from taking his job.

  • looks comfy~ apparently you're just being you. asian. efficient. you can't help it!! tell your boss it's in your genetics to do well in what you are assigned to do because it's all relevant to science! that's the way to go. then blame your colleagues to be too slow. you'll make friends this way. hahahaha~

  • Why work hard when we have Mexicans for that?

Then again, screw your co-workers, who cares what they think... they probably just want to steal something from you if they're being friendly.

I say don't work hard OR associate with co-workers. Then everyone will be like "whaaaat?" and you'll go "That's right, bitches. Can't figure me out."

  • slow it down.... what are you rushing for

  • at first i thought that you were joking and actually saying that you were working for your parents or something.. but now i'm curious. what do you do?

  • are you speedy in other areas? ( LOL, i couldn't resist)

well, Tiger, I say....TIME FOR A NEW JOB!

  • Looks like you're on the right track, actually better! And sounds like life couldn't get any better for ya!

  • Getting along with your co-workers is an important skill. They cover for you if you screw up, it makes your job easier when you have to work together, stuff like that. If your co-workers hate you, then they'll magnify the mistakes that you make, which will inevitably happen.

  • Well i say if u can get ahead go for it!

  • go all out and have fun, let 'em bite your dust....just be a little wary of your boss' tendency to flirt on the job

  • I hope I can work that well one day too.

  • fuck it. blaze them.when you leave or when recommendation time cones, it will be based mainly on your performance. leads are not there babysit but to set the pace.

  • be careful! maybe you're outdoing his favorite employee or making him look slow in comparison or something... anyway don't get fired!

  • Lol, since you  have started a new job, you might get a kick out of this:

    http://callcentres.com.au/Call%20Outcome%20jokes.htm

  • Finish earlier and hand in later =p ?

  • i would try to find out why your boss doesn't want productivity.  I always hate working with slackers but you can never avoid it. the 20/80 rule right? in the meantime i think toning down slightly to avoid being ostracized would be a prudent course of action but don't dumb it down too much. you still want to be king of the office!
