Learn Proper Sushi Etiquette to Make a Good Impression.
You uncultured swine.
There should be a bunch of provisos in it:1. It's okay to use the same side of the hashi (chopsticks) to pick at community food among close family and close friends. When I say 'close', I don't mean your relatives that you see only once a year.
2. When you mix your wasabi and shoyu (soy sauce) you don't have to mix it completely and you don't have to leave it separated either. Find your groove and stick with it.
3. Most of the time you will want to eat nigiri sushi in one bite (tamago being the exception because of its size), but sometimes your maki sushi will be too large, especially futo maki. Don't be an idiot with a mouth full of sushi, unable to chew.
4. The ginger is meant to be used between different types of sushi, to clear your palate.
5. Don't fill your soy sauce and wasabi completely to the rim.
6. Drink only liquids that are light; this is not prime rib.
7. If you have to break apart your chopsticks to use them, you may get splinters if you're not careful. Best method is to roll your chopsticks together between two hands, and not rub them against each other as if you're sharpening steak knives.

NOM NOM NOM!
@CaKaLusa - Nice. I needed this for my next sushi day ^^
NOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOM.
Gosh dangit. I've been craving sushi all day and now I'm stuck in a town where there is none.
Informative, thanks
When I had sushi, everyone stirred the green stuff into the soy sauce. Oh course, this was in Korea.
tamago sucks
nomnomnom. I want a dragon roll now.
I'll go with fork on this one. Thanks for the info in case I get brave and try it.
can you imagine what kind of things i witness all day long? and i feel kind of bad cuz we just recently just switched from good quality chopsticks to cheap ones to cut costs...everyone should just bring their own chopsticks...
you know what happens a lot that my boss never noticed about the customers until the other day? there are all these old women who think the soy saucers are tea cups. they hold them out to me for tea re-fills or they fill it themselves with tea and drink out of it. It happens all the time...is that normal?
I saw this picture yesterday! Apparently I don't have good sushi etiquette. I had no idea you were supposed to dip the soy sauce on the non-rice side. =O!
Yeah... adding wasabi to your soy sauce is actually insulting because the sushi chef would have already added the appropriate amount of wasabi. Of course, this only counts when eating nigiri-zushi.
I'm guilty of the "don'ts" 4/6
@Konrado -
Yes, yes it does. Why anyone would pay for that, I have no clue.
Hm. I didnt know you were suppose to eat sushi with the fish on your tongue. And how can you dish the fish in the soy sauce, won't it fall off?
Well aren't you an expert o:
mmm sushi.
I just stuff it in my mouth like any other food. LOL
Wow, I had no idea about some of those things. Hahaha. Thanks?
seriously, no one follows half these rules. eat with your fingers!?!?!? wtf
I just had sushi last night. I was about to be upset about the wasabi in the soy sauce bit. I like to put just a tiny bit into mine, not the whole damn thing. I'll remember the rolling the sticks bit, that sounds helpful.
I don't eat sushi, but I do eat other japanese food. I think you have to clean your sticks because they almost always provide the crap kind that are wooden and stuck together. Splinters in your mouth are more importantly avoided than being disrespectful in any way.
As for the wasabi in soy sauce.... no sane person is going to slop on wasabi on their sushi, they're going to put it in the soy sauce at their own mix, like you said.
I want sushi now )=
I wouldn't recommend eating sashimi with your hands... your hands might smell fishy after awhile.
hm. I never knew about the blunt side of chopsticks, or that only the fish side should be dipped in soy sauce.. hmmm. god, now I want some. Thanks.
i know all this stuff already. heh
@haloed -
Even the cheap chopsticks should already be separated at the tip. Are they giving you the ones that are stuck together from bottom to top? Weaksauce, dude.
never knew u were such a sushi guru.
the sad thing is most sushi restaurants aren't good enough for you to follow all those guidelines.
I don't know what ur guidelines would be regarding this, but one sauce I truly love on sushi, particularly the handrolls is a saki & soy sauce mixture...yum. anyway, cool post. thanks
lol thanks
Too much rule. JUST EAT IT.
mMmMMmm now i want sushi!
Guilty of the ginger x_X NoM NOM i always ask for extra and put it on my sushi as well as use it as a palate cleanser
@daniel__n - I don't even eat sushi, but that was funny...
lol thanks... I think I could've used this last weekend. haha
I never knew there's such thing as sushi etiquette. Now I feel like an uncultured barbarian after reading this.
Now craving sushi at 7:30am. >,<
